New phone, new toys

Have a new smartphone to replace the one that died. Well, not new-new, just new to me. My old phone was a Galaxy S2. Had it for nearly six years. Good run for a smart phone. Had been meaning to do backups for ... um ... weeks before it died. Kicking myself for not having done that.

This phone is a HTC. It's much of a sameness between them, though I do still instinctively reach for buttons where they were on my old phone. Was running with an old school phone for a few days. Could have kept using it, but a smart phone gives so many more options. :)

Playing with some new toys at work. The old trucks I was driving were very bare bones, bash it til' it works type trucks. These new ones have more buttons than my computer! Will take a bit of getting used to!

Phone re-load

Getting ready to take the phone on the road for a few months, so did a major clean up and upgraded the memory.

Have lots of room for music now, the tricky bit is to find a decent music playing app with features that I like.

Not going to load any movies on though, this phone is pushing four years now, don't want to burn the screen out from watching movies for hours at a time.

Full reboot

Well, gave the old phone a good kerb stomping by doing a factory reset and software upgrade.

Lamentably, being an older phone it won't take the latest version of Android (without rooting it), so it's as upgraded as it is going to get (until I root it).

Lasted about 3 1/2 years before choking out of memory, we'll see how long it lasts this time.

Reset

Hmm, my phone keeps complaining that it is low on memory. I have bugger all apps installed and gigabytes free but it insists on installing everything to on board main memory.

I've already moved as much as I can off main to usb memory but the biggest apps (I'm looking at you Facebook App, you resource hog) can't be moved off main memory. So there aren't enough to run apps properly. Email won't sync any more.

I guess the next option is to do a factory reset then upgrade the operating system. But in order to do that, I need a reliable landline with a good amount of data available, and there's a chance I could brick the phone. So I'll probably need to wait until I get home again.

Whenever that is...

Looking for a mobile...

Wow, haven't updated in a while. Need to make sure I update more often.

Anyway, I currently have my Sony Ericsson W610i which has servmed me reasonably well thus far. It's okay, but there are a few things I'm not liking about it. I can keep using it, I'm just looking at other options.

The first thing to do is to decide what I want the phone to do. There's no point going out and buying something with little thought or reason as I'd probably buy some flashy but useless thing. Pity stores don't let you hold and try the phones.

Here's what I definitly must have in a phone:

  • Make and receive phone calls easily

  • Send and receive sms easily, including pre-emptive dictionary

  • List missed calls / made calls / received calls

  • Camera - best possible! This is very important!

  • Be able to easily write notes to myself

  • Sync with the computer (preferably on the Linux system, XP otherwise)

On the other hand, here are the things that I definitly do NOT want:

  • not an iPhone

  • no GPS

  • no wireless
And just to be picky, here are a few things that would be nice to have, but which I don't have any strong feelings one way or the other:

  • be able access email

  • use facebook / internet

  • use mobile as modem for computer
There are probably a few more features that I want, can't think of too many at the moment.

If I think if anything else, I'll make sure that I write it down. I'd like my next phone to work nicely and last a long time.
